HEARTBEAT:SERIES

My first word, and most frequently asked question, was ‘why?’
In the heartbeat:series, my works have been ‘meta’, exploring our drives, our ‘why’ we engage with dance, as makers and spectators.

一 . HEARTBEAT:XO

2019

Created in collaboration with Perth-based musician Azariah Felton, heartbeat:xo pays homage to heartbeat:mb, and explores how biological rhythms influence acoustic and kinetic space to viscerally reveal who we are as individuals.

二 . WHOSE LIFE IS IT?

2019

heartbeat:xo explored what shapes identity and drives dance. In my next work, I collaborated with three dancers to explore the question of ‘Whose life is it?’ that drives a dance work. The choreographer’s? The dancers’? The audience? The people who shaped and influenced our lives? A confluence was found in the universality of the human experience in dealing with loneliness and loss of a loved one.

三 . KINDRED 亲

2021

A no less profound relational loss is the subtle denigration of relationships for the ‘fast food’ of virtual connection. The coronavirus pandemic has been an amplifier for isolation, and the erosion of relationship-building. In an interdisciplinary collaboration with musicians, dancers and a videographer, we shed light on the vital, life-giving importance of relating to each other, and the difficulties in doing so. This creative development premiered at the Dance Centre's International Dance Day 2021.
