With the advent of social media, there has been a subtle denigration of relationships for the ‘fast food’ of virtual connection. In 2021, with the public health measures enacted as a result of the global pandemic; with Trumpian politics, #BlackLivesMatter and #StopAsianHate; the year was a catalyst for social rifts and isolation, and the erosion of relationship-building. Kindred was created to highlight the importance of meaningful connection, and the kindred relationships which nourish and sustain us. Now in 2022, with the Russian-Ukraine tensions, this work resonates with the idea that people regardless of race or nationality unite in kinship of shared values and passions, through music and dance as the ultimate expression of our physicality. Excerpts arranged and adapted from Schindler's List by John Williams and Sonata in A Minor, Melacholia by Eugene Ysaye. The rights for the music are retained by Universal Music Studios and this video is not to be distributed for monetization.

Ceci n'est pas une chaise (this is not a chair)
This triptych weighs in on a historical discourse around representation and reality, picking up from Renee Magritte's (1929) picture of a pipe with the text Ceci n'est pas une pipe (this is not a pipe). The picture of the pipe is not the pipe, "the word is not the thing”. We first consider how everything is created twice - it must first be a thought, a belief, a word, before it is brought into reality. In considering Plato's Cave, our experience as shadows of reality, we then navigate our autonomy to shape reality by navigating our beliefs, our metaphysical reality, and re-examining our conceptions and definitions of an idea. Pipe Dream by Xin Hui Ong - Dance Film Dance Plus
Filmed in Wooroloo, Pipe Dream reflects on our contribution to the climate crisis and the delicate interdependency between man and nature. It looks at our relentless pursuit of progress and acquisition and marks the devastating impact of the bushfires on the lives of Western Australians. The Goldfields pipeline which features in the film was built in 1903 to connect remote gold mining communities to water from Perth Hills. Water is still piped hundreds of kilometres east, today to the Wheatbelt, contributing billions of dollars to the state's prosperity. Pipe Dream is dedicated to those who have devoted themselves towards fighting for a sustainable future, moving away from a colonial patriarchy and towards a safer and more stable world. Riddled with indecision (and the complexities which make or break a relationship), the question is often as simple (and as difficult) as ‘should I stay or should I go/yo me enfrio o lo soplo (should I cool it or should I blow)’ (The Clash). Embedded within our anthropological narrative, this ripples on from a personal to the body politic in the context of the global geopolitical flashpoint at which we now stand in 2022. Tesseract Topography
‘The quest for certainty blocks the search for meaning. Uncertainty is the very condition to impel man to unfold his power' - Erich Fromm. What if we could see the four-dimensional world of space-time in three dimensions, through a topographic render of its shadow? A dreamscape emerges from a reflection of everyday life, as we navigate the liminality between possibility and reality, emotion and thought, memory and forgetfulness, pondering what exists, and what is lost. Performed by Anja Fanslau, installation by Nathan Coburn. Supported by The Dance Centre and Tara Cheyenne. Music - Tightrope by Laurie Anderson.
